Porch Pirate Failure: Mandevilla!

Last spring, with high hopes and visions of vibrant blooms adorning our front porch, we embarked on what we thought would be a foolproof gardening project. Our plan was simple and promising: to pair the elegant trails of Mandevilla with the lush, colorful mounds of violet Petunias in our planters. The idea was to create a dynamic visual statement right at our doorstep, sourcing our plants from the local big-box store. However, as the season progressed, our well-intended project turned into a learning curve we hadn’t anticipated. Here’s the tale of our planter saga, where the vigorous Mandevilla overshadowed our star Petunias, offering a valuable gardening lesson in the process.

The Planter Vision

Our vision was clear and captivating: Petunias, known for their vigorous blooms and rich violet hue, were to be the stunning backdrop, mounding up at the back of our planters. In contrast, the Mandevilla vines, with their graceful trails and exquisite blooms, were chosen to elegantly cascade down the front. This combination promised a perfect balance of texture and color, making our front porch the envy of the neighborhood.

The Unforeseen Challenge

As the weeks passed, our anticipation turned to surprise and eventually disappointment. The Mandevilla plants, rather than complementing the Petunias, embarked on a quest for dominance. Far from trailing neatly in front of the planters, they grew aggressively, overtaking the sides and back, and completely engulfing the space meant for the Petunias. The Mandevilla’s takeover was not the only issue; the Petunias, contrary to our expectations, did not exhibit the vigorous growth we had envisioned. Instead of becoming the showstopper of the planters, they seemed to shy away, overshadowed and outcompeted by their more aggressive companion.

Spring Redemption: Our New Plan for the Perfect Porch Planters

After last year’s gardening misadventure, where our dreams of vibrant porch planters were overshadowed by an overzealous mandevilla, we’re back with a renewed sense of purpose and a solid plan. This year, armed with research and a clear vision, we’re determined to right our wrongs and create the porch display that we initially envisioned. Here’s how we plan to transform our porch into the blooming haven we know it can be.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Varieties

One of the most crucial lessons we learned from last year’s experience is the significance of plant selection, not just in terms of aesthetics but also in growth habits and maintenance needs. It became clear that the choice of petunia variety can make a world of difference. That’s why we’ve decided to trust a brand we know and love: Proven Winners. Their Supertunias have a reputation for vigorous growth and minimal maintenance, exactly what we were looking for but didn’t quite achieve last year.

Why Supertunias?

Proven Winners’ Supertunias are renowned for their robust growth, eliminating the need for the constant deadheading that many other petunias require. This self-cleaning aspect means they can dedicate more energy to producing lush, vibrant blooms throughout the season. After much consideration, we’ve chosen the “Supertunia Vista Jazzberry” for its stunning fuchsia shades that promise to add a dynamic pop of color to our front porch.

Complementing with Contrast

To complement our choice of Supertunias and add depth to our planters, we’re considering pairing them with sweet potato vines. The cascading habit and contrasting foliage of sweet potato vines can provide a beautiful backdrop to the vibrant fuchsia of the Supertunias, creating a visually appealing display that draws the eye and captures the heart.

A Plan for Peak Performance

Acknowledging one of our oversight from last year, we’re changing our approach to fertilization. We’ve learned that consistent feeding is key to achieving the lush, vigorous growth we desire. Therefore, we’re committed to fertilizing our planters weekly, a regimen we now understand is essential for supporting the abundant flowering of petunias. This regular nourishment will ensure our Supertunias and accompanying plants have all they need to thrive and flourish.

A Palette Expanded: Embracing Reds in Our Porch Garden Makeover

In the wake of last year’s gardening endeavors, where our front porch planters became a learning curve in balance and plant compatibility, we’ve turned our attention to another aspect of our garden that beckoned for a transformation. Flanking either side of our porch are two modest plant beds, each home to a solitary Dee Runk boxwood. Last season, these beds felt starkly bare, lacking the vibrancy and fullness we achieved with our planters. This year, armed with insights and a rejuvenated spirit, we’re set on not just addressing this bareness but also infusing our garden palette with a color that was notably missing last year: red.

Envisioning in Red: Crafting Our Garden’s Next Chapter

The journey to incorporating red into our garden is both deliberate and inspired. We seek a shade that not only captures attention but also seamlessly integrates with our garden’s existing colors, particularly the vibrant fuchsia of our “Supertunia Vista Jazzberry” planters. Our search leads us to a perfect ally in this endeavor: the “Supertunia Mini Vista Scarlet.”

Chosen for their dazzling red blooms, we envision the Mini Vista Scarlet as the ideal companion to our boxwoods, promising not just to fill the visual void but to weave a tapestry of lush vibrancy beneath them. Their renowned spreading capability is exactly what we need to combat the previous season’s bareness.

The Allure of Supertunia Mini Vista Scarlet

Our choice of the “Supertunia Mini Vista Scarlet” is a nod to both beauty and pragmatism. Their striking red flowers offer a bold counterpoint to the green boxwoods, creating a compelling visual dialogue that enhances the garden’s appeal. Moreover, their growth habit promises to envelop the ground in a rich blanket of color, achieving the density and fullness we yearn for.

These Supertunias align with our garden philosophy, marrying robust growth with ease of care. They share the self-cleaning trait of their Vista Jazzberry counterparts, liberating us from the chore of deadheading, and they thrive under the same regimen of regular watering and weekly fertilization.

A Season of Renewal: Reflecting on Our Gardening Journey

As we stand on the threshold of a new gardening season, filled with anticipation and armed with lessons from the past, our journey with the front porch planters and garden beds serves as a testament to the ever-evolving nature of gardening itself. Through our experiences—both the missteps with the mandevillas and petunias and our strategic pivot to embrace the vibrant hues of Supertunia Mini Vista Scarlet—we’ve woven a narrative that’s about more than just plants. It’s about growth, adaptation, and the joy found in cultivating beauty.

Our initial foray with the planters, while not yielding the results we hoped for, taught us invaluable lessons about plant compatibility, growth habits, and the importance of understanding each plant’s unique needs. This year, with a refined approach centered on the vigorous and self-cleaning Supertunias, we’re not just seeking redemption for our planters; we’re celebrating the resilience and persistence that gardening teaches us.

In addressing the bareness of our garden beds, our choice to introduce the striking “Supertunia Mini Vista Scarlet” alongside our solitary boxwoods represents more than an aesthetic decision. It signifies our commitment to creating a harmonious and dynamic garden space that reflects our growing expertise and our desire to learn from each season’s challenges. The planned addition of sweet potato vines for contrast and depth further illustrates our evolving understanding of garden design—highlighting the importance of texture, color balance, and plant synergy.

Our journey with the planters and garden beds is a microcosm of gardening itself—a blend of art and science, patience and effort, trials and triumphs. As we move forward, we carry with us the lessons learned, the excitement for what’s to come, and the knowledge that with each season, we grow not just plants, but ourselves. Here’s to a spring filled with lush growth, vibrant blooms, and the fulfillment of our gardening aspirations. May our gardens flourish, and may we, as gardeners, flourish alongside them. We’ll Keep you posted on the project!

The rendering looks beautiful! I had trouble with the mandevillas going awry as well. Good luck with your gardening. Let’s see how it turns out in the spring.

Thank you @capentalc! I appreciate it! That was my first experience with Mandevillas. I was outside once a week trimming them back! That only seemed to encourage them to grow more! LOL I’m hoping that our plan for this year gives us the look that we are going for! We watched video after video, read as much as we could and even called different growers to finally arrive at the design that we came up with. What I didn’t include in the post is the original design included a Purple Fountain Grass in the center of each. After some research of their growing habits, we decided to remove them because by the end of the growing season it would definitely be covering our doorbell! LOL

Yes, fountain grass is a danger for sure! We learn as we go along as I find out.
